Catia Montagna
"I am a self-taught photographer and an academic economist by profession. I was born in Italy and spent most of my adult life in the UK. I have been taking photographs since I remember, for a long time just for myself. But photography is a powerful form of communication between the photographer, her subjects … and the viewers. And so, I am thrilled and honoured to be part of the stimulating community that is Progressive Street, a group of talented photographers from all corners of the world where daily exchanges make every ‘still’ a living thing.
My background in the social sciences has probably influenced my photographic interests. I love to observe how we interact with our environment and how this interaction is influenced by socio-economic factors and social norms. However, by and large, I do not follow a documentary approach. Nor am I at the lookout for the unusual or the bizarre. Rather, I am drawn to the subtle poetry of unremarkable, ephemeral moments of everyday life – where the nuances of a posture, a gesture or a surrounding speak of the tension between what is universal in the human condition and the specificities of time and place."
